Family Support Friday Session 3

All of children’s behaviors are a form of communication, but sometimes we can’t understand what they are trying to tell us. This Family Support Friday session aims to equip participants with a framework for interpreting behaviors, reducing power struggles, and responding in ways that build trust, connection, and positive outcomes within families.

This session introduces an accessible framework for recognizing behavior patterns, identifying the needs driving them, and responding with effective, relationship-centered strategies. Grounded in respect for each child and family’s individuality, the session emphasizes connection, dignity, and inclusive practices that honor diverse family experiences and voices.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize common patterns in children’s behavior and understand how behavior communicates needs.
  2. Identify the underlying needs driving behavior by observing patterns across settings and situations.
  3. Use practical, relationship-centered strategies to respond to behavior in ways that meet individual needs and reduce power struggles.

    Peggy Hoime

With a background in Elementary and Special Education, Peggy spent many years working with children who were labeled as having an inability to learn and function in a regular classroom. She has been passionate about working with these children because she, too, was labeled as one who was emotionally handicapped and unable to learn. Because of her labels, she was allowed to go to college on a disability grant and was accepted on probation. After graduating from college, she has spent over 40 years telling young people to not let anyone tell them that they can’t learn or achieve what they desire in life.

Because of the amazing results she had with children, who were thought to be behind in their emotional and educational abilities, Peggy was asked to speak at Teacher’s Conventions and Parent &Teacher’s Associations on how to motivate children, Not only to learn, but to excel WITHOUT PUTTING THEM ON MEDICATION!
