Family Support Friday Session 3

When young children are identified as having developmental delays or disabilities, families are often overwhelmed. They may struggle to connect with early intervention services, understand the special education process, navigate the transition into school, and find the right services and support for their child. In this Family Support Friday session, we will describe strategies and provide tools to help you improve communication and build trust with families as they navigate this process. The strategies will include basic tips for plain-language writing, tools to connect with families, and easy-to-read resources for both schools and families.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe why effective engagement and communication are critical for families of young children with disabilities or delays.
  2. Identify and practice 3 concrete skills to improve communication, build trusting relationships, and have difficult conversations about disabilities or delays.
  3. Learn how to support families through the transition out of child care or early intervention into the school system.
