Behavior as Communication: Understanding Needs and Responses
Family Support Friday Session 3
All of children’s behaviors are a form of communication, but sometimes we can’t understand what they are trying to tell us. This Family Support Friday session aims to equip participants with a framework for interpreting behaviors, reducing power struggles, and responding in ways that build trust, connection, and positive outcomes within families.
This session introduces an accessible framework for recognizing behavior patterns, identifying the needs driving them, and responding with effective, relationship-centered strategies. Grounded in respect for each child and family’s individuality, the session emphasizes connection, dignity, and inclusive practices that honor diverse family experiences and voices.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize common patterns in children’s behavior and understand how behavior communicates needs.
- Identify the underlying needs driving behavior by observing patterns across settings and situations.
- Use practical, relationship-centered strategies to respond to behavior in ways that meet individual needs and reduce power struggles.
