Understanding the Family-Wide Impact of Parental Mental Health
Family Support Friday Session 11
Parental mental health is one of the strongest predictors of child wellbeing. When caregivers lack emotional, social, or structural support, the impact can ripple across the entire family system. This Family Support Friday workshop explores how maternal, paternal, and caregiver mental health influences early childhood development, attachment, and long-term outcomes. Participants will learn how stress, isolation, trauma history, and limited support systems affect both caregivers and children and how families and providers can work together to interrupt these cycles. Designed for both caregivers and professionals, this session will provide trauma-informed, culturally responsive tools to strengthen protective factors, build support networks, and promote resilience within families.
Learning Objectives
- Explain how parental mental health directly impacts child development, attachment, and behavior.
- Identify risk and protective factors affecting maternal, paternal, and young parent mental wellbeing.
- Develop action steps to build protective factors within their own families or the populations they serve.
