Poison Prevention Training
Training description
Medications are the leading cause of nonfatal poisoning in Massachusetts for children aged 0-4. This training will equip home visitors and early intervention specialists with the knowledge and skills to identify poison risk both in the home and in the community, support families in reducing exposures, and connect caregivers with prevention resources.
Participants will explore risk factors, prevention strategies, and sample guided questions for addressing a range of poison hazards including medications, cleaning products, carbon monoxide, lead, cannabis, bug bites and stings, repellents, mushrooms, berries and poison ivy, oak and sumac. Through interactive activities, participants will practice identifying risks and having poison prevention conversations with the families they work with.
Learning Objectives
- Effectively communicate the burden and causes of childhood poisonings to families during home visits, helping them understand the risks and take appropriate preventative actions.
- Identify poison risks in and around the home and provide appropriate recommendations to families to prevent childhood poisonings when conducting home visits.
- Recognize that poisoning risks extend beyond the home and that environmental, seasonal and social factors can impact a family’s exposure to harm.
- Raise awareness of resources, tools, and services available to promote poison prevention, and guide families on how to access these resources during home visits.
