General Injury Prevention and Home Safety
Training description
In Massachusetts, unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for children and youth aged 1-4 and 13-17, and the second leading cause for children ages 5-12. This training will equip home visitors and early intervention specialists with the knowledge and skills to identify and mitigate unintentional injury risks in and around the home and connect caregivers with tools and resources to promote home safety.
Participants will explore risk factors, prevention strategies, and sample guided questions for addressing falls, burns and scalds, choking and strangulation, electrocution, weapon safety, poisoning, drowning, heat and warm weather safety, and playground hazards. Through breakout group activities, participants will practice identifying risks, sharing prevention strategies, and having injury prevention conversations with the families they work with.
Learning Objectives
- Effectively communicate the burden and causes of childhood injuries to families based on age and development-specific risks during home visits, empowering caregivers with the knowledge and confidence to prevent injuries.
- Recognize that home visits provide a unique opportunity to meet families where they are and support them in creating safer environments for children.
- Identify injury risks and provide tailored, culturally responsive recommendations to families to prevent childhood injuries when conducting home assessments.
- Raise awareness of resources, tools, and services available to promote home safety and prevent injuries.
