Fire Education
Training description
This webinar will be a powerful exploration of how community-based fire and life safety education actively protects children and strengthens family resilience across Massachusetts. Grounded in the Commonwealth’s historic achievement of two consecutive years with zero child fire deaths (2020–2021) and a 78% drop in child fire fatalities over thirty years, this interactive training equips family support staff and providers to bridge the gap between fire service expertise and the diverse families they serve.
Participants will learn practical strategies to build collaborative partnerships with local fire departments, address systemic safety barriers in marginalized communities, and coach caregivers to translate safety messaging into customized, practiced home escape plans that empower children and foster thriving, safe home environments.
Learning Objectives
- Identify local Fire Department Fire & Life Safety Educators and outline a strategy to coordinate accessible, culturally inclusive fire safety workshops or events for their programs and families.
- Guide diverse family structures (including multi-generational, foster, and kinship households) through mapping a customized Home Escape Plan that incorporates two clear exits per room, designated meeting spots, and adaptive measures for children with sensory or mobility needs.
- Equip parents and caregivers with tools to run non-frightening “Exit Drills in the Home” (E.D.I.T.H.) and monthly smoke alarm routines, turning environmental safety into a practiced family habit.
