MASOC Lunch and Learn: Nonconsensual Sexual Behavior among Youth: Age dynamics and implications for prevention
This Lunch and Learn series is a monthly, 1-hour, high-octane focus on the emerging issues for clinicians and allied professionals working with children and youth engaging in problematic sexual behaviors. This is a collaborative effort between MASOC and MACA.
Recent research has helped to illuminate the scope of youth-youth sexual harm, suggesting that some 70% of self-reported sexual victimization during childhood are caused by other youth. The research team led by Dr. Melissa Bright looked more closely at this data to better understand the dynamics occurring between young people.
Their finding was that in the majority of those cases, the age difference between the children and adolescents was less than two years. Dr. Bright and her team discuss this research, as well as its implications for prevention pathways.
