When we can provide families with stable housing options, food assistance, childcare, and other economic assistance, we are providing concrete supports helping families meet their basic needs and ultimately helping prevent child abuse and neglect.  

Concrete supports can significantly reduce family stress, creating a safer and healthier environment for children. During fiscal year 2024, Family Centers across Massachusetts provided nearly 2,500 instances of concrete supports, adding up to more than $130,000. These supports ranged from baby supplies and food assistance to emergency housing and transportation and have made a big impact for families. 

Despite the continued need, these concrete supports may end next year when American Rescue Plan funds conclude. The direct relief these funds have provided families with has improved economic security, parenting stress, and overall wellbeing.

Here’s how these supports have directly impacted families and helped prevent child abuse and neglect: 

• A family experiencing homelessness had temporarily given custody of their newborn to an acquaintance while they awaited a housing voucher and frequently visited the Family Center to see their baby in a child-friendly space. As the Family Center staff developed a relationship with the parents, they provided financial support to aid with basic needs while encouraging the parents to join education groups and playgroups. This approach allowed the family to stabilize and rebuild their lives. 

• A mother who was struggling to make ends meet after losing work hours due to illness turned to the Family Center to help her with an overdue car insurance payment, ensuring she could continue working and providing for her family. 

• A family facing foreclosure due to medical bills has missed mortgage payments and the Family Center used direct support funding to help them make their third overdue payment, keeping them in their home and out of foreclosure. This financial relief helped maintain a stable living environment for the children. 

Concrete supports are more than just financial assistance; they are a lifeline that helps families navigate challenges, reduce stress, and create a stable, nurturing environment for their children. 

These supports empower parents to provide a safe, healthy, and loving home by addressing basic needs and connecting families with additional resources and support systems. This comprehensive approach not only prevents child abuse and neglect but also creates an environment where families can thrive, contributing to stronger communities as a whole.
