Working Together to Strengthen the Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Workforce in Massachusetts
The Children’s Trust, in partnership with the Massachusetts Association for Infant Mental Health (MassAIMH) and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC), is proud to announce that Massachusetts has become the first state to systematically implement the MassAIMH Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Endorsement® Credential within the Healthy Families America home visiting system. This announcement comes during Mental Health Awareness Month, underscoring the importance of supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of infants, young children, and the adults who care for them. The Endorsement for Culturally Sensitive, Relationship-Focused Practice Promoting Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health® is an international credential that recognizes specialized knowledge and skills among professionals who work with or on behalf of expectant parents, children from birth through age six, and their families. MSPCC is the implementation agency for the MassAIMH Endorsement® credential and centers the Diversity Informed Tenets as a compass throughout the implementation process.
“MassAIMH, in partnership with MSPCC, is so very pleased that The Children’s Trust has chosen to implement the MassAIMH Endorsement credential within its Healthy Families America home visiting programs. The Endorsement credential ensures that professionals have the skills and support to work with our communities’ youngest children and those who care for them, and to do so in developmentally attuned, strengths-based, and effective ways. This is a big step forward for young children and families in the Commonwealth, and a big step forward for the dedicated professionals who work every day to support the healthy development of our youngest residents.”
Anat Weisenfreund, MassAIMH Board President
“We at MSPCC know that supporting children and young families is serious business. Healthy Families Massachusetts home visitors and the team of supervisors and coordinators that support them are highly skilled professionals with a deep commitment to serving families and their young children in an equitable, culturally responsive way. We are honored to recognize their commitment by partnering with MassAIMH to implement the Endorsement® credential throughout the Healthy Families Massachusetts system.”
Nancy Allen-Scannell, Executive Director of MSPCC
Implementing the MassAIMH Endorsement® within the Healthy Families Massachusetts system will strengthen, diversify, and expand the family support workforce to ensure that more children and families in the Commonwealth have equitable access to infant and early childhood mental health and early relational health supports and services. Healthy Families Massachusetts is a free and voluntary support program for first-time parents, funded and supported by the Children’s Trust. The Children’s Trust partners with local organizations, including MSPCC, to implement the program within their community.
“At the Children’s Trust, we believe that the strength of our workforce is directly tied to the strength of our families. Implementing the MassAIMH Endorsement® within Healthy Families Massachusetts not only affirms the expertise of our home visitors but also ensures families receive the highest quality, relationship-centered support. This partnership is a powerful example of how we can work together to build a more equitable and responsive system for all families across the Commonwealth.”
Jennifer Valenzuela, Executive Director of the Children’s Trust.
Over the past three years, 100 professionals from Healthy Families Massachusetts – nearly 50% of its workforce – have earned MassAIMH Endorsement®, strengthening their expertise in supporting first-time parents and marking a major investment in the skills and expertise of the home visiting workforce. Before beginning the Endorsement® process, professionals must meet the rigorous prerequisite of completing all required Healthy Families Massachusetts trainings.

The collaboration between the Children’s Trust and organization partners ensured that all participants met the foundational requirements before embarking on the Endorsement® process. This collaborative effort aims to make the process accessible and equitable for everyone involved.
The implementation mirrored a parallel process and focused on co-creating a relational scaffolded space for the professionals on their endorsement journey, just as they hold families and children relationally in care. Implementation of MassAIMH Endorsement® consisted of a series of six ninety-minute sessions led by MSPCC’s Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) team and the Children’s Trust Healthy Families Massachusetts Training department. These sessions, conducted in both English and Spanish, provided concrete relational support to the applicants working on their MassAIMH Endorsement® application in real time while aligning it with the principles of Healthy Families Massachusetts. The Healthy Families Massachusetts program is designed to be a primary prevention service focused on building and promoting protective factors in families through attuned, relationship-focused service delivery.
“The application is very streamlined and easy to follow. The support of the MSPCC staff and Children’s Trust was great, reflective and provided a set of goals each time which was helpful.”
